Our Kāpala

Our Wao Camouflage kāpala (pattern) is drawn from the Wao Nahele - the Hawaiian Dry Forest. We painted endemic Wiliwili tree, Kāwelu grass, and other native plants of the Wao Nahele, and inlaid them with an olivine kāpala niho (tooth-stamp pattern).

Today, the native Wao Nahele occupies less than 5% of its original range in the Hawaiian Islands. So, why create a camouflage of rare Hawaiian plants when the modern landscape is dominated by invasives? Because our Wao Camouflage is more than just a camouflage! It is an illustration of our native past and a restoration goal for our future. The better we hunt our wild game, the more food we provide for our ‘ohana, and the more our native plants grow. Through our combined hunting and restoration efforts we can regrow our Wao Nahele so that our modern landscape resembles our Wao Camouflage kāpala once again!

Wao Camouflage Company supports pono hunting and native habitat restoration in Hawai'i. Mālama 'āina, always.
